How does social media provide security to activists who use it?
The widespread use of the internet and social media sites to quickly disseminate information has certainly aided in the progression of social activism. But does it provide a second layer of security to activists who may be at a higher risk? Some movements consist of a few donations and benefit concerts, whereas others reside in a much riskier environment. People protesting corrupt or tyrannical governments regularly risk their lives for the sake of the movement. Social media certainly provides a means for them to gather and discuss plans, but it may also harm the movement by making plans widely available.
In my final project I will explore the connections between social media and security in activist movements. The online presence certainly helps maintain a collective identity, rather than one person who can easily be targeted. Possessing an online presence, however, also leaves a virtual trail behind, something that can be tracked by the right people.
An online presence certainly promotes the movement, but provides an in for those that desire to take it down. Infiltration becomes easier under the guise of someone interested in the movement, and virtual trails can be tracked. Plans made public are definitely easier to dismantle rather than those brewed in secrecy.
On the other hand, the benefits of social media clearly outweigh the negatives. Being able to reach a wider audience can't harm a movement, and does grab some outside attention, which may be helpful in the long run.
